Volunteer spotlight: MaryKate Boggs
MaryKate Boggs, 25, enjoys the fast-paced environment and challenge of volunteer firefighting with Centre Square Fire Company.
“Ultimately, being a volunteer firefighter provides a unique combination of challenges, personal growth, and deep satisfaction,” said MaryKate. “It’s a role of not just physical work, but also emotional strength, and it gives me the chance to have a meaningful impact on the community every day.”
MaryKate also enjoys that the station is close-knit and supportive.
“As someone who is also in the military, I thrive on teamwork and working together with others towards a common goal,” said MaryKate, who is currently a Sergeant in the Army National Guard.
She joined Centre Square in January of 2024 and is continuing a family tradition of volunteering. Her uncle’s father previously served as the fire chief, and her uncle is also a lifetime member. When she’s not volunteering or serving as a Sergeant, MaryKate works as a teacher at A Child’s Place.
For any women on the fence about volunteering, MaryKate says, “Believe in yourself and your abilities. The fire service is about teamwork, physical strength, and mental resilience, and women have proven time and time again that they can excel in all of those areas. Don’t let doubts hold you back–if you’re passionate about the job, go for it. You’ll face challenges, but you’ll also grow stronger from them.”
