Volunteer Spotlight: Matt Kozeniewski

At 16 years old, Matt Kozeniewski joined Centre Square Fire Company in 2014, a few years after his older brother started.

“One thing I’ve always been taught in life is to give back to those in most need,” said Matt.

His brother also told him how family-oriented Centre Square was, which Matt says still rings true today.

“You’ll build friendships you’ll have for life,” he said.

Matt currently serves as a Lieutenant, Public Relations Officer and Trustee.

“The best part is being challenged every day, building the skills you already have and gaining skills you never knew existed,” he said. “Every call you go to, you’re learning something new and growing.”

“Any call you see someone smile in the end” are Matt’s most gratifying calls. “You know you did the job to the best of your ability and even in the worst time, you were able to make them comfortable,” he said.

Volunteer firefighters have busy schedules and Centre Square needs more people who are willing to volunteer and answer calls when others can’t make it.

“More firefighters are needed because the amount of calls coming in is increasing,” said Matt.

He encourages the community to get out of their comfort zone and volunteer as a firefighter, fire police, junior firefighter or administrative member.

“Try something new you’ve never tried before and be there for someone who needs you. It’s gratifying that you can be the person willing to help save the day,” he said.
